Each year, 742 Squadron cadets attend National Camps and Scholarship Courses during the summer months. 742 Squadron is allocated a small number of spots for these camps and courses based on the number of cadets in our Squadron. Generally, we have a greater number of cadets who are interested in these opportunities than spots available. The Squadron therefore, holds an internal selection process to determine which cadets will then attend what is known as "National Exams and Interviews" at the regional level (All Air Cadet Squadrons in the Ottawa Valley) where the final cadet selections for camps and courses are completed by a committee. In order to determine which cadets will attend the National Exams and Interviews, 742 Squadron ranks the cadets based on the following:

  • rank;
  • cadet training level;
  • previous summer camp experiences;
  • attendance at mandatory activities;
  • participation in optional activities;
  • academic level; and
  • for the Scholarship candidates: their average on the ground school exams.

For each category; a standardized point system is used. For example, a cadet in level 1 will receive 1 point, while a cadet in level 4 will receive 4 points; each cadet receives 1 point per optional activity he/she attends, etc. The points are then tallied to provide a total score for each cadet. Scores for all cadets competing for the same course are compared, and the cadet with the highest score is selected to attend the National Exams and Interviews.
